Life abroad. Better informed.

A starting point for U.S. veterans and families living in or visiting the Dominican Republic. Use the official sources below to check your benefits and plan your care.

Understand FMP coverage

FMP generally covers eligible care related to a VA-rated, service-connected disability overseas. It is not blanket insurance for all care. VA says you may choose a licensed local provider; that does not make the clinic a VA facility.

Get your FMP benefits letter

VA’s August 2026 guidance says eligible veterans no longer need to register before using FMP. Download the benefits letter from the Letters area of your VA.gov account and discuss the covered conditions with your provider.

Keep clear billing records

Confirm who will submit the claim and whether you need to pay up front. Keep an itemized bill, relevant treatment records and receipts. VA provides an online FMP claim option and explains the documents needed.

Using TRICARE overseas

TRICARE requires a TRICARE-authorized provider for covered care. Network status, referrals, payment arrangements and your plan matter. Check the official directory and confirm your situation with the overseas contractor before assuming a visit is covered.

CHAMPVA for eligible family members

CHAMPVA is separate from FMP and TRICARE. Its guide explains benefits abroad and applicable cost sharing. Ask whether the provider accepts assignment, what you must pay and who files the claim. Confirm the clinic’s payment and claim arrangements before booking.

Find accredited benefits help

Use VA’s official directory when choosing someone to represent you on a benefits claim. Medical care, help with a healthcare bill and accredited benefits representation are different services.

Support between visits

VA offers tools for topics including PTSD, sleep and mindfulness. Use the official VA app directory to explore them. For urgent crisis support abroad, use the Veterans Crisis Line’s international guidance or online chat.

Informed choices

Before choosing a clinic

  • Who will treat me, and how can I verify their professional license?
  • Which services are available at this location?
  • What does my benefit cover, and what might I need to pay?
  • Can I receive an itemized bill and copies of my treatment records?
  • Who should I contact about a billing question or correction?

Plan your iWellness visit

Start with a conversation about your needs, clinician availability and next steps. Bring your benefits information to the appointment; do not send sensitive records through a general inquiry form.
